Founded in 1973 as New England Merchants Leasing Corporation, BTMU Capital was originally a wholly owned subsidiary of New England Merchants National Bank, which became the Bank of New England when it merged with Connecticut Bank and Trust in 1985.

We were acquired by The Bank of Tokyo in 1990 and named BOT Financial Corporation. When our parent organization merged with Mitsubishi Bank Ltd. in 1996, our name changed to BTM Capital Corporation. In 2006, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi merged with the UFJ Group and we became BTMU Capital Corporation.
